Dean Is Thinking Green

The George H. Dean Co., Braintree, MA is pleased to announce their chain-of-custody certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The company completed a recent audit for both FSC and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification and expects to receive SFI certification soon. Having certification from both agencies broadens the number of environmentally friendly papers the company can offer. Both FSC and SFI are independent international organizations that set forth principles and standards that address environmentally responsible forestry practices.

"This is just another step in the process to reduce our carbon footprint and be the most environmentally friendly printer we can be. We believe it is our responsibility to reduce printings impact to the environment in any way we can", said Ken Michaud, CEO.

In 2004 George Dean installed computer to plate (CTP) systems to eliminate the use of film and harsh developing chemicals. The company uses vegetable based inks, low VOC press solutions and water based plate processing to minimize impact to the environment. In addition to the use of recycled papers the company has a comprehensive recycling program for waste paper, ink and excess press solutions. To reduce energy usage to company has replaced plant lighting with energy efficient electronic ballasts and high output low wattage bulbs, replaced air conditioning with energy saving models, changed to a high efficiency pure-water humidification system and increased roof insulation to minimize heat loss.
